Gems

I enjoy cutting gemstones using methods similar to thise used in period,
using both period and modern gem cuts. I also can design and modify
custom cuts. I hope the following links are helpful.
Suppliers
- UltraTech - Makers of the
faceting machine I use, which I consider the best one out there.
- ColorWright - Sells faceting
rough and equipment. Also has a "How To" page with an extensive amount
of info on the
properties of
gemstones.
- Gram Faceting - Sells faceting
rough and equipment. Also is the author of many
excellent designs, some of
which are listed free on this site, and some are in books for sale.
- New Era Gems, an excellent
supplier of gem rough that I always frequent at the Gem and Jewelry Shows.
- Creative Gems has a wide
range of synthetic gem rough.
- Morion Company,
manufacturer of a wide variety of synthetic gemstons, including
actual synthetic diamond.
Designs and Resources
- GemCad, an excellent piece of
software that allows for design and simulation of gem cuts. I use the
free DOS version extensively, and there is a commercial Windows version.
-
Bob's Rock Shop's pages on faceting, including the largest database
of online designs I've ever seen.
- Old Pueblo Lapidary Club
Facetors Companion CD containing many designs, articles, DOS GemCad
and GemPrint (the latter isn't available anymore on the GemCad site)
- BOG, an optimizer that allows
one to tune GemCad designs for specific stones.
